What to Do if Your Child or Teen Needs Braces

February 20, 2023

Is Your Child/Teenager a Candidate for Braces or Invisalign?

When considering braces for your teen or child, there are several factors that you need to consider. Some children or teens may be reluctant or anxious about getting braces or Invisalign, so speaking with them about their options and the importance of wearing braces to correct their dental issues is essential.

The first step is to determine if your child or teen is a good candidate for braces. It's important to visit an orthodontist, who will be able to evaluate their dental health and provide you with the best recommendations for treatment. The orthodontist can also answer any questions you have about the process and help make sure that your child or teen feels comfortable with their choice of treatment.

Once it has been determined that braces are necessary, there are several options available in terms of treatment. Traditional metal braces are the most common option for children and teens, but other options such as ceramic braces, lingual braces (braces on the backside of teeth), and Invisalign may be available depending on the individual’s dental needs.

Traditional braces are the metal braces that many children and teens may be familiar with. In some cases, these may be necessary to correct certain dental issues. On the other hand, your child or teen may be a candidate for Invisalign. This treatment is a series of clear aligners that are used to move the teeth into the desired position gently.

Preparing Your Child or Teen for Braces

In order to ensure a successful treatment plan, it is important for parents and teens/children to start preparing for their new braces as soon as possible. This includes developing an oral hygiene routine, good eating habits, and aligning any extracurricular activities so that they don't interfere with regular treatments and check-ups.

Additionally, it's important to help put them at ease to make the process easier. Take the time to speak to your child, let them ask questions, and determine what concerns they have. If there are any concerns they have that you're unable to address, be sure to make a list and bring them to your initial appointment. They also need to know how orthodontics can improve the look and function of their smile. You can even show them before and after pictures of other children or teens who've had braces to show them their potential results.

If they are worried about their appearance with braces, let them know that modern braces have smaller metal brackets and a lower profile. You can also inform them they can choose from various colored bands to cover their brackets and personalize their style.

Our orthodontists can also help explain to your child why they need braces and how they will help improve their lives. We're happy to answer any questions and will help make them feel comfortable and prepared for braces or other orthodontic treatment.

Still Not Convinced? Try These Methods to Convince Your Child to Get Braces

If you're still not able to convince your child to get braces, here are a few more methods you can try:

  • Show them photos of celebrities that have had braces. Do an internet search with your child to show them the many famous people who've used braces to correct their smile.
  • Find a teacher, coach, friend, or another adult your child trusts and admires at school or in the community who has had braces and can help encourage them to see the long-term benefits of wearing them.
  • You can plan their treatment to start during summer break or another school break to give them a chance to get used to their new look before going back to school.

Bringing your child to the dentist for the first time is a milestone moment, one that sets the right tone for a lifetime of oral health. The sheer number of considerations, from scheduling the right appointment to preparing your little one for the visit, can become overwhelming. However, ensuring the experience is positive and educational doesn't have to be as daunting as it seems. This guide is carefully crafted to provide a comprehensive approach for young families and new parents to smoothly sail through their first dental adventure. Discover the steps you should take to prepare, understand what happens during the visit, and nurture healthy dental habits for the future. Understanding What to Expect Your first family dental visit will lay the groundwork for comfort in a dental setting. Typically, the initial visit will comprise a whirlwind of activities, including completing new patient forms, consultations with pediatric dentists and dental hygienists, and perhaps even a gentle mock exam to familiarize your child. The key is to turn what could be a stressful experience into a fun adventure – we want your child to look forward to visiting the dentist for years to come. Roles of Dental Staff Families will likely be introduced to various dental staff members, each with their unique role in promoting a positive experience. The dentist will discuss the importance of oral hygiene and assess your child's dental health, while hygienists will talk you through the best home care based on your child's individual needs. Don't be surprised if office team members create an atmosphere of playfulness – they're there to make every child feel at home. Preparing Your Child for the Dentist A dentist's chair isn't your child's natural habitat, but with the proper preparation, it doesn't have to be a place of fear. It's all about setting expectations and conveying the importance of dental care so that your child can feel invested and in control. Sharing positive stories of your own dental experiences, using children's dentistry' show and tell' methods like role-playing, and coordinating appointments during the same time as you can all establish a sense of normalcy for your child. Other ways to prepare your child for their first dentist visit include: Explaining the purpose of the visit in a relatable, non-intimidating manner Encouraging your child to ask questions and express any concerns they may have Choosing a child-friendly dental office that offers toys, games, and other distractions Discussing the Importance of Dental Health Conversation is critical in priming children for their first dental experience. Make the dialogue about health, not fear. Compare it to other health check-ups and explain that dentists are here to help keep their smiles beautiful and strong. The dentist, in essence, becomes a new hero in the world of growing up. Role-playing and Visual Aids Role-play sessions at home—complete with a "dentist's chair," mirror, and torch—can make the unknown familiar and even fun. Supplement these activities with colorful, dentist-themed books or videos, which can engage your child's imagination and curiosity. Practical Tips for Parents Your role in orchestrating the first dental visit is no small feat. With practical tips for scheduling and what to pack, you can ensure that you're not caught off guard when the big day arrives. By aligning these details with your child's comfort and well-being, you're setting up the first appointment to be a notable success. Scheduling the Appointment Choose an appointment time that coincides with your child's typically happy hours, avoiding meal and nap times. A relaxed, well-fed child is much more likely to engage positively with the dental staff, making the experience more pleasant for all involved. What to Bring Be sure to bring your child's medical history, a list of questions you have for the dentist, and their favorite toy, book, or blanket to help comfort them. Other things to bring to their first appointment include: A bottle of water in case your child gets thirsty A change of clothes in case of any accidents or spills Any relevant insurance information or completed patient forms During the Appointment Even the most well-prepared children can have moments of nervousness. During the appointment, you are the lighthouse, guiding them through any apprehension and ensuring effective communication between your dentist and your child. Staying Positive and Calm Children are remarkably perceptive, and they'll take their cues from you. If you display calm assurance and positivity, your child is more likely to feel secure and open to the new experience. Encouraging Communication Teach your child that their voice matters and that speaking with dental professionals is encouraged. The more they communicate their feelings, the more the staff can help cater to their comfort. Post-Appointment Tips The final section presents guidance on reflecting on the dental visit with your child and turning any uncertainties into learning opportunities. Also, you will establish the foundation for a successful dental routine at home – a critical step in maintaining oral health. Discussing the Experience Engage your child in a conversation about their first visit. Celebrate any milestones, such as being brave during the chair's new experience, and be positive about the experience when discussing future visits. Setting Up a Dental Routine Your child's first dental appointment is a starting line, not a one-off event. Work with your dentist to customize a home dental care regimen that's effective and enjoyable, the foundation of which is daily brushing and regular check-ups. Tips for creating and sticking to a dental routine with your child include: Brushing and flossing together as a family to model good habits Making brushing fun with singing, dancing, or using flavored toothpaste Setting specific times for dental care, such as after breakfast and before bed Call Severn's Dentistry and Orthodontics Today!
